Geology
Mookaite is found only in Western Australia, and named after Mooka Creek which it was discovered near. According to locals, the Aboriginal word "mooka" means "running waters".
Mookaite is often thought of as an ordinary jasper, a type of microcrystalline quartz, but it is actually a type of fossiliferous sedimentary rock! It is composed of a type of microcrystalline quartz formed from the silica shells of ancient marine organisms called radiolaria. Mookaite is a rock, not a mineral because it does not have a defined chemical composition. It contains varying degrees of silica, and is classified as chert, chalcedony, porcellainite, opaline silica or jasper.
Mookaite jasper formed during the Cretaceous Period -145 million years ago, and is now found in the Windalia radiolarite, the rock formation created from these fossils.
These fossil remains were deposited over many years as sediment in shallow areas of seabeds. As waters receded, the remains were solidified by additional silica carried in groundwater, along with mineral impurities to give the rock a wide variety of color and patterns.
Mookaite has a hardness of 6-7 out of 10 on the Moh’s scale of hardness so it’s relatively durable but it’s also brittle, meaning it can fracture easily. Mookaite, like other jaspers, is opaque.
Safety & care
Mookaite is water safe for short periods of time, but since it’s brittle, extended exposure to water can cause damage to the stone. I never recommend making crystal elixirs meant to be consumed with any stone; you never know what kind of impurities are in the stone, or polishing chemicals. Mookaite is safe to be left in the sun and isn’t known to fade.
